Removing your car's diesel particulate filter DPF might be tempting, because the damage caused by a clogged DPF can result in four-figure repair bills. An internet search reveals numerous companies advertising DPF removal services, but as well as being bad for the environment this is also illegal, and the Government has moved to tighten up the regulations concerning such practices.
In October Robert Goodwill, roads minister, announced that garages and testing stations will be required check for a DPF as part of the MoT test from February The vehicle will automatically fail test if the filter had been fitted as standard but is no longer present.
Located within the exhaust system, a DPF captures small soot particles, preventing them from being expelled into the atmosphere. As with any filter it needs emptying periodically and this is done automatically, by burning up the particulates in a process called regeneration. To meet or exceed European-dictated emissions standards, DPFs have been fitted to most diesel cars for almost a decade and, because they need high temperatures to regenerate, low mileage stop-start motoring can cause them to block.
Should a fascia warning lamp be ignored, expensive engine damage can occur. Should you buy a car with a DPF? Removal of a DPF is illegal. Peugeot petrol or diesel? Honda Civic: diesel or petrol? Does my Mazda 3 need a new DPF? For them to work efficiently, the car needs to be driven at a constant speed, for at least fifteen minutes, to allow the DPF to heat up enough to regenerate.
Certain motorists, such as urban commuters, might find this impossible. The latest diesel engines are less prone to problems, because they are more efficient and burn off soot faster. Even in normal use, however, DPFs tend to need replacement after a certain mileage has elapsed, the rate of which varies between 80, andmiles, dependent on the car make and model, the type of use and whether or not the engine has had regular oil changes with a lubricant that does not contain additives that block the filter.
Instead of having a new DPF fitted, it is possible to have it cleaned. A handful of companies offer a mail-order chemical cleaning service, which means your car will off the road for at least 48 hours, but which could potentially save you hundreds of pounds. While carmakers might argue that the alternative part is inferior, all DPFs for cars made from and many prior to that date, are subject to independent Type Approval tests for performance and longevity. Motorists may rue the financial implications of a clogged DPF, but technical advances are likely to continue to improve their efficiency and reliability.
If nothing else, the change in policy is likely to draw more attention to the issue and perhaps make buyers think carefully about their requirements when buying a new car. If your driving habits are not suited to keeping a DPF running smoothly, you should consider buying a petrol model instead.

From just an initial fault code read through the vehicles On Board Diagnostic OBD socket using a Scan Tool, to using other specialist test equipment i. Most owners of late model onwards, some even older turbocharged diesel vehicles, that are installed with a manufacturers DPF will sooner or later encounter one or more of the following concerns. If the vehicle is an auto, the gearbox may sometimes seem to stick in a high gear when setting off and then not change through the gears as normal; once again, re-starting the engine may clear the EML and temporarily re-set the gearbox fault.
The engine may seem down on power and have a different sound or a change in its exhaust note; it may also seem less responsive than normal when revved hard and the vehicle stationary. This may also be accompanied by a change in engine note and excess smoking from the exhaust tailpipe; this may be because an active DPF regeneration is taking place. There is an excessive amount of smoke coming from the exhaust when the vehicle is driven hard or when you re-start the engine after switching it off when hot, but re-starting it soon after.
During regeneration, some of the diesel injected through the engine on the exhaust stroke, by-passes the piston rings and ends up in the sump; this is why it is recommend the oil should be flushed and changed frequently and following repairs.
The engine water temperature gauge reads higher than normal, this could be because the DPF is partially blocked and is restricting the hot exhaust gases from escaping.
In extreme cases, an engine may initially start but then stall, or even not start at all; this could be due to a severely blocked DPF. Until recently, it was normal practice for common rail diesel fuel injection specialists like CRD Performance and even some general repair garages to completely remove these troublesome filters. A smoke emissions test will still however be carried out. Correct removal procedure also involves re-mapping the vehicles Electronic Control Unit ECU so it no longer checks that the diesel particulate filter is still in place.
Some less scrupulous Re-Mapping companies lacking proper software programming experience, often re-programme the ECU so that after DPF removal not just DPF fault codes are cancelled but often all other non-related codes are too.
This procedure, whilst initially reducing some customer complaints, due to the EML no longer coming on, has the adverse effect of rendering the vehicles OBD system useless to alerting the driver of any other future faults being present.
Although still requested by some of our customers, DPF removal and the necessary software upgrade using a Quantum Tuning remap of their vehicles ECU is becoming less popular. Because renewal costs can sometimes run into thousands, especially on some newer or low volume executive vehicles, we are often asked if we offer any kind of preventative maintenance service to extend the vehicles DPF life span, well now we can. This latest equipment purchase compliments our Rolling Road Chassis Dyno that we often use to successfully perform our DPF Dyno-Clean service on some of our customers vehicles. How to fix instagram invalid parameters error
All vehicles installed with a DPF will at some stage perform a passive or ECU controlled active cleaning cycle regeneration when their DPF becomes restricted or partially blocked.
If this procedure fails, for whatever the reason, and the DPF becomes too blocked for an active regeneration to be effective, then a Technician, by using a vehicle specific scan tool may be able to initiate a safe and controlled forced regeneration of the vehicles DPF. It is for this reason that taking your vehicle back to the Main Dealer is ever increasingly turning into a costly DPF replacement. Before choosing what repair options are available we need to clarify with the vehicles owner that whatever the original faults or cause of the vehicles DPF failure, these still need to be correctly diagnosed and rectified unless in some cases where certain fault codes may be cancelled out as part of a re-map.
CRD Performance will replace failed or blocked diesel particulate filters but generally this would only be if either a forced regeneration or forced chemical DPF clean was initially carried out and not been successful. We are sometimes offered more in scrap value for old units than what a new copy DPF replacement unit costs, which must tell you something about the differences in materials used in the vehicle manufacturers original filters.
We also offer DPF removal on most vehicles, however, some may be difficult and costly to remove due corrosion and seizure of fastenings or just because they are so inaccessible and may even involve in extreme cases removing the engine.By ajtMarch 7, in Ford Focus Club. The whole reason the Diesel Particulate Filter came along was to clean up the diesel car image Euro 5 Emissions, Emissions from diesel cars are a big concern worldwide and thanks to the DPF technology, diesel cars are much cleaner. DPF regenerationrepairs and new replacements are seriously expensive and can lead to some vehicles becoming scrapped. After the regenerating of the DPF, it can now restart the cycle of collecting harmful exhaust gases again.
There are 3 different types of DPF regeneration, which are active, passive and forced. Active reads the back pressure of the exhaust or soot load of the filter to determine when to begin the regeneration. Once initiated, the timing of the fuel injection will alter that will result in the exhaust temperature increasing to burn the soot particles.
Passive will take place once the exhaust reaches optimum temperatures where the regeneration will automatically begin. The exhaust will reach these temperatures will occur mostly on prolonged highway driving. Manufacturers that use a passive form of regeneration typically install a oxidizing catalytic converter near the engine to increase the temperature.
The diesel car will enter limp mode and will require a car diagnostic tool to force the regeneration. How long until a DPF will fail is hard to tell because some manufacturers have had to replace some in the first 3 years and some never. The most common reasons for DPF failures are:.Unitrunker 2
However, sometimes these warning lights can be false alarms and you should try clearing the fault using an OBD2 diagnostic tool. If the warning light continue to display, you will notice the following symptoms:. The cost of cleaning or replacing your DPF sounds scary but you can forget this following some simple driving habits. With that in mind, here are 5 ways to fix a blocked DPF:. If you are currently in limp home modedriving at high RPM step 2 will be your best chance of getting out of limp mode.
Once you have normal power, go for a long fast drive on high quality fuel. The EGR system works by recirculating exhaust gases back into the engine in order to lower cylinder temperatures and NOx emissions. The EGR system is made up of several components that work together to accomplish this task.
The EGR pressure feedback sensor, also known as the delta pressure feedback sensor, is a sensor that detects the pressure changes in the EGR system. When the EGR pressure feedback sensor detects that the pressure is low, it will open up the EGR valve to increase flow, and just the opposite will close the valve if it detects that pressure is too high.
As the pressure reading detected by the EGR pressure sensor is one of the most important parameters used by the EGR system, if it has any issues it can cause problems with the EGR system, which can lead to engine performance issues, and even increased emissions. Usually a problem with the EGR pressure feedback sensor will produce a few symptoms that can alert the driver of a potential problem that should be serviced.
One of the first symptoms of a problem with the EGR pressure sensor is engine performance issues.Mconnect vs roon
A malfunctioning EGR system can lead to engine performance issues such as rough idleengine hesitationand a decrease in overall power and fuel efficiency. Another symptom of a potential problem with the EGR pressure sensor is a failed emissions test.
If the EGR pressure sensor has any issues which affect the functionality of the EGR system it can cause the vehicle to fail an emissions test. This is particularly important in states that require the vehicle to pass an emissions test in order to register the vehicle.
If the computer detects any problem with the EGR pressure sensor signal or circuit, it will illuminate the Check Engine Light in order to notify the driver of an issue.
A Check Engine Light can be set off by a wide variety of issues so having the computer scanned for trouble codes is highly recommended. The EGR pressure sensor is one of the most critical components of the EGR system for vehicles that are equipped with them. The signal it provides is one of the main parameters that the EGR system uses to function, and any problems with it can affect the overall functionality of the system. For this reason, if you suspect that your EGR pressure sensor may be having an issue, have the vehicle inspected by a professional technician, such as one from YourMechanic, to determine if the sensor should be replaced.

DPFE Sensor and EGR Information
Trust us when we say: This is not the end of the world. History Is Repeating Itself This is not the first time automotive enthusiasts have felt the growing pains of working with emissions equipment on our vehicles.
In order to reduce air pollution, America decided to mandate vehicle tailpipe standards that were radically cleaner than before. Back then, enthusiasts felt wronged by the new hardware that showed up under their cars. They complained about reduced fuel economy, overheating, too much complexity, and poor vehicle performance. The catalytic converters, EGR components, and air pumps made working under the hood much more difficult—so hard-core enthusiasts ended up removing them.
Sound familiar? But what happens if you do? And what if like our muscle car predecessors you ever need to repair or replace the diesel particulate filter DPF under your truck? Diesel engines well, all engines really emit pollutants into the air we breathe.
This matrix of materials a composite of cordierite, silicon carbide, or metal fiberscalled a diesel particulate filter DPFtraps the particulates soot flowing out the exhaust pipe. All DPFs capture soot until they fill up and create too much backpressure. At that point, DPFs use one of two approaches to regenerate clean themselves: active or passive. Passively regenerating DPF systems are commonly found in the retrofit marketplace for construction equipment. Passive systems rely on precious metal-coated substrates to heat the normal exhaust flow to temperatures that trigger regeneration.
Although more sensitive to duty cycle and temperature, once installed, these DPF systems are considered to be more user friendly, as they do not require fuel additives, have no moving components, and only need to be serviced for annual cleaning. Active regeneration of these DPFs is employed when the exhaust temperatures are too irregular for a passive system to regenerate consistently.
Active regeneration is accomplished by changing parameters in the engine to increase the exhaust temperatures in the DPF. This requires precise knowledge of engine parameters and access to the engine control unit. Because of this, the engine management approach is performed by the OEMs that have direct access and control over their engine design. Among the active strategies used are: late or post-injection of fuel into the combustion chamber, changes to the turbo boost, changes to the EGR valve, intake air throttling, and retarding the injection timing.
Post-injection late-cycle injection in particular causes increased engine wear by diluting the engine oil film with fuel. Some of the other methods also decrease available oxygen in the exhaust, which impacts the soot-oxidizing ability of the particulate filter. Lastly, much of the heat generated by increasing the combustion chamber temperature is lost to engine coolant and engine components, thus decreasing fuel economy. Cleaning vs. As the exhaust gases pass through this filter, emissions of particulate matter PMcarbon monoxide COand hydrocarbons HC are trapped in the filter and reduced by more than 90 percent.
This trapped diesel particulate matter DPM settles inside the filter walls until temperatures reach levels that allow for DPM combustion. The process of combusting these trapped particulates inside the filter without an intolerable buildup of engine backpressure is called filter regeneration. People who think of this as a self-cleaning we did for the DPF are practicing a little wishful thinking.
To truly clean the DPF involves taking the filter out of the exhaust system and putting it in a special cleaning chamber.
